William Morris
William Morris (1834-1896)  is best known for his leading role in the Arts and Crafts Movement. He strongly believed that the idea and the design of an item should work together and that ideally the artist, designer or craftsmen should in fact be the creator of the finished design. It was an idea that rebelled against mass manufacturing and sought to cherish the hand worked product that the designers had themselves completed. He revived a number of lost craft techniques and made them commercially viable by using quality materials and exceptional design. Many of his designs are inspired from nature and medieval patterns. He himself produced items in a range of areas including over 600 designs for wallpaper, textiles and embroideries. He also designed over 150 stained glass windows and over 650 borders for printing. His designs are still used today in furnishings and in the jewellery at Firecracker Studio.
